Sunderland Piano Soceity, Riyad Nicolas performance 22 September 2015
Sunderland Pianoforte Society opened its 73rd season with a recital given by Riyad Nicolas, a brilliant young Syrian pianist, who is sponsored by the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. This scheme is famous for sponsoring talented young musicians and for many years the Society has been grateful for this generous financial help.
Clearly Riyad Nicolas is a pianist of great talent and virtuosity who entertained an enthusiastic audience with his wonderful playing.
The recital opened with Prelude and Fugue Book 2, No. 1. by J. S. Bach and was followed by Sonata No. 31 in A flat Major Op. 110 by Beethoven which was played with style and good contrasting tone. A delightful Chopin Mazurka was followed by Liszt’s Grandes Études de Paganini No. 6. Riyad gave a brilliant performance of this and started the second half of the programme with two Scarlatti Sonatas. The evening finished with Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit which was played with great maturity and sensitivity. This was a memorable recital given by a talented young pianist who we hope will make a return visit.
Besides solo performances, Riyad is also a keen chamber music player, and has performed regularly in duos with violin and flute, collaborating with artists including the eminent flautist Wissam Boustany. Riyad Nicolas is one of the most exciting young artists to emerge from the Middle East.
